I turned OUT to be a gay historian by osmosis...on "Orange Tuesday-June 6,1977" and the re-creation crew happened to be wrong(they claimed it was in response to Anita Bryant's anti-gay win in Wichita,Kansas). Not so! It was in Dade County Florida, to reverse a Gay Rights Ordinance. The march actually began at the Catholic Church on a side street a block away. Harvey never spoke to a crowd in front of the Castro Theater... Yes, he had a bull-horn, but he never stopped and yelled "OUT OF THE BARS AND INTO THE STREETS" as the impromptu march went down Market Street, turning pass City Hall and downtown to Union Square. The crowd swelled to over thousand... and Harvey spoke to the crowd...using his bullhorn there. I snapped several photos of Harvey, with a "SAVE OUR RIGHTS" sign in the background. There were only a few signs since this march was not planned! The biggest cheer that night came when a young black lady climbed a nearby flag pole and unfurled a flag with "GAY POWER" on it. I took my film over to Associated Press to they proceeded to wire it across the country. Randy Shilts also used the image in his book"THE MAYOR of CASTRO STREET". I recommend looking at the following web-site for story of that night and behind my photo at
http://thecastro.net/street/memoriespage/pritikin/scene05.html and also recommend viewing the whole site dedicated to the history of the Castro by those who were there when it was not a recreation.
